Editorial policy and disclosures
Editorial policy and disclosures
Our standard
We aim for guidance that is useful and checkable. That means:
- Official sources first. For rules and figures we rely on official sources such as the IRS, the Social Security Administration and government health and visa pages, and the original research behind any rule of thumb. Rules change often, so guides say when they were last checked.
- Showing our working. Calculations show every assumption, so you can check them and use your own numbers.
- Labeling examples. When I share numbers, they’re either my own (rounded) or clearly labeled as modelled.
- No invented experience. We don’t make up personal stories, test results or credentials. When a guide describes the editor’s own experience, it says so.
- Budget first. We never encourage borrowing or extra spending to earn rewards or reach a goal.
- Not advice. Money, tax, health-insurance and cross-border topics are general education. For your own situation, talk to a qualified adviser.
How guides are written
Guides are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools. The editor is responsible for what’s published, including its accuracy, its sources and any corrections.
Updates and corrections
We update a guide when we learn that a rule, figure or recommendation has changed, and we change its date only when its content has changed in a meaningful way. If you spot an error, please tell us and we’ll correct it and note the change.
Commercial relationships
RESTED has no affiliate links, sponsored content or paid placements at the time of writing. If that changes, we will say so clearly beside the relevant link or recommendation, and update this page. Payment will never decide what we recommend without telling you.
General information only
Our guides are general education. They don’t replace official terms or individual financial, tax or legal advice.
